ROUND 2 – MAN VS MACHINE Tournament, LONDON
22 June, 2005
t was a very interesting game indeed
today in round two of the Man vs Machine tournament from the Wembley Conference
Center in London, resulting in a draw for both parties.
I sat down with chief programmer Chirlly Donninger and talked about the second
round game …“I think it was a fantastic game on both sides and was very
difficult for HYDRA because it was a game favoring Grand Master Adams. Also
HYDRA played positionally quite good … lets see what the next four games hold
for us” said Donninger.
Also Grand Master Michael Adams said: “I’m happy with my performance today,
it was a tough game, and Hydra kept its defenses up throughout. A draw was the
only reasonable conclusion to the game otherwise we would have been battling for
hours. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s game.”The game which lasted for
over five and a half hours and 65 moves and went like this

Master Adams US$ 10,000.The game lasted for two hours and forty minutes, with
Grand Master Adams resigning after 28 moves.Grand Master Adams came with high
optimism that he will be winning today however he found HYDRA to be a very tough
opponent.
When asked about today’s game, Mr. Adams replied: “It’s been an intense
game after yesterday. I hoped that today’s game would have become easier.
Hydra does seem to be the hardest computer to play against and is learning and
adopting quickly”The HYDRA team is delighted with this result and considers
HYDRA’s performance simply outstanding.Additionally the HYDRA team stated,
“We aren’t here to prove humans as weak. We are simply here to improve the
game of chess and we are using and working with HYDRA to make improvements in
the game of chess. That’s our overall objective.”
The game which lasted three hours and odd minutes, with Adams resigning after a mere 33 moves.

ROUND 4 – MAN VS MACHINE Tournament, LONDON
25 June, 2005
It was a terrific day here in London today on
round four of the MAN vs MACHINE tournament. A tough game for both the Grand
Master and Chess Super Computer but the gates of victory lane only opened for
HYDRA.
The game lasted for over four and a half hours, and a whopping 50 moves. The results and prize money after this round stands as follows:
Grand Master Michael Adams, 0.5,
US$ 10,000
HYDRA, 3.5, US$ 85,000
Adams said: “I came to today's match feeling far more confident than the past week's previous games but I wasn't happy with my opening moves. Whilst I think the end game should have been a draw, I have seen that Hydra is far more skillful than my initial estimations."
The HYDRA team said “It was a
closely fought battle and Grand Master Adams delivered yet another strong game.
But the fact that once more he was unable to beat HYDRA just goes to show how
powerful a machine it is."
Also earlier I had a chance to talk to Grand Master Christopher Lutz who gave me his opinion of the tournament. “So far the games have been going pretty smoothly for HYDRA. When playing with White in games 1 and 3, HYDRA could quickly develop an initiative and put Adams under pressure. This then lead to two clear victories. In game 2, things were a bit different, Adams reached a slight advantage out of the opening, but HYDRA defended patiently and managed to get a counter-play. In the end, the game was drawn, as neither side could do any progress. For the second half I expect that Adams has learned from his mistakes and will offer more resistance. I think a score of 4.0:2.0 or 4.5:1.5 in HYDRA’s favour might be the final result.”

ROUND 5 – MAN VS MACHINE Tournament, LONDON
26 June, 2005
Today was the fifth day and round five of the MAN
vs MACHINE tournament … all the way from London, England. We will be updating
you on the past four days and also bringing you the latest day’s results.
The last four games have not gone so well for the Grand Master, with 4 losses and 1 draw racked up against him. Today seem no better than any other day for him either.
Game One: Faced with a topical position in Petroff’s Defence, HYDRA played the new move 14.Rb1. In the ensuing tactical complications Adams went wrong with 23…Rc7? (instead of the better 23….cxd4) and HYDRA managed to win a mighty pawn. After 33 moves HYDRA scored its first victory.
Game Two: Adams managed to get a
slight advantage from the opening, probably 10…e5 was an inaccuracy by HYDRA.
However, after HYDRA managed to get its knight to d4, chances were balanced
again. Adams had a strong grip on the king’s side, but HYDRA had counterplay
on the other wing. In the end, Adams managed to setup a fortress which lead to a
draw.
Game Three: Playing with White, HYDRA went for a closed Ruy Lopez. Between moves 16 and 18, Adams played a few slightly odd moves. After 26.Ra6!, all of HYDRA’s pieces were coordinated beautifully, and after the final blow 28.Bxh6! Black had to resign.
Game Four: Even though he was
playing White, Adams was playing rather passively and after 15 moves, HYDRA had
already a slightly better endgame. Most probably Adams should have managed to
draw that position, but it seems to me that the preceding games had already
taken a lot of energy from him. HYDRA showed some very fine play to convert its
advantage to a win.
Game Five:
After the conclusion of todays game, I had a chance to sit down with GM Adams
and Chrilly Donninger.
“I’m not upset with how I’ve played, I don’t think I’ve played too
badly. Obviously this is an incredibly strong opponent so to win would be an
incredible achievement, but let’s see how I go tomorrow,” Adams said.
Hydra Chief Programmer Chrilly Donninger said: “In our quest to prove the power of Hydra we could not have hoped for a better outcome. This is a far more difficult opponent than Kasparov and Adams has played extremely well, so we are very pleased with the performance of our machine"
The game lasted for three hours and 41 minutes, and a whopping 41 moves. Results and prize money after round five are as follows:
Grand Master Michael Adams, 0.5,
US$ 10,000
HYDRA, 4.5, US$ 110,000

ROUND 6 – MAN VS MACHINE Tournament, LONDON
27 June, 2005
Today, the six day and final round of the MAN vs MACHINE tournament between UK number 1, Grand Master Michael Adams and Chess Super Computer HYDRA, ended in another victory for HYDRA.
The game lasted for more than four hours and a thrashing 41 moves putting the final standings after today’s concluding round at:
Grand Master Michael Adams, 0.5,
US$ 10,000
HYDRA, 5.5, US$ 135,000
The future of MAN vs MACHINE chess is now firmly
in doubt after the convincing victory at the Wembley Conference Centre in London.
Match Arbiter Albert Vasse said: “I have overseen a number of man vs machine
matches, even one with Kasparov. I have never seen a human play as well as Adams
has in this match, but still he got only one draw out of six matches. We have
entered a new phase in chess computing. It will now be very hard for any human
being to triumph over a machine.”
Michael Adams said: “I didn’t play badly throughout the event, but it’s just so difficult to make an impact. It’s not like playing against other humans – for starters against humans you may actually win a point.”
British Grand Master Stuart Conquest, live commentator for the match, also believed HYDRA will change the face of man vs machine chess forever.
“Even when Adams was in a really strong position you always think the machine can triumph. There were moves no one in the room could really understand, but I guess when the machine can calculate 40-plus moves ahead, it’s bound to see something we can’t. This makes it an almost impossible opponent.”

Shredder's last book move. The position is
already quite critical for the German chess program 17.Bxd5

Last book move by Hydra 11.Kb1 b5 12.Bd3 b4. At the

That was the last book move by Shredder,
which comes out of its openings preparation a pawn down and a
negative value. Shredder knows the line well in Graz this
position was on the board against Fritz. 16...Nef6 17.Rhe1 a5

Man
vs. Machine Chess960 Match
The
first-ever man vs. machine Chess960 match between (GM) Levon Aronian and the
Dutch program The Baron, a creation of Richard Pijl, ended 1-1. Both games ended
in a draw. Pijl was pleased with the result, but Aronian was also happy not to
have lost against the computer. “It is always very tricky to play against
computers, and I did not want to risk too much”.
The

The
starting position of the first game:

A position with the knights on a1 and b1, the bishops are on g1 and h1!

Levon Aronian had a black-out and forgot the castling rules! He wanted to put
his King on b1, but his opponent showed him patiently how to castle “a-side”:
put the King on c1 and take your rook from c1 to d1. 6...Rf8 7.Bxb6 cxb6 8.Bxc6

The
Baron (NL) – Levon Aronian (ARM) Game 2
Probably
a difficult position, even for the computer. The Baron thought about 3 minutes
and then played 1.d4 ...and Levon Aronian invested 5 minutes for his crucial
first move.1... c5 2.dxc5 Qxc5 3.a3 b5 4.b4 Qc8 5.e4 e6 6.Be2 a6 7.c4 bxc4
8.Qxc4?! Hmmm. We don´t like this move. Programmers should have learned one
lesson from several man vs. machine matches: keep the Queens on the board! “I
could have implemented this strategy in my program, but it is impossible to keep
an eye on every aspect of the game. I am happy that my Chess960 Baron is running
so well”, Pijl replied. This is also important in Chess960. Now it is easy for
Aronian to equalise. 8... Qxc4 9.Bxc4 Ng6 10.Bd4 h5 11.Nfd2 h4 12.0-0 Bxf6

Shredder overtuigend winnaar 4e Internationaal CSVN Toernooi.

Unbelievable! Junior sacrifices a piece for an attack on Kasparov's king! A
total shocker. Kasparov was visibly stunned on the big X3D screen. He calmed
down after he was sure he wasn't being mated. The attack is not a forced line,
it is very speculative.

Veelspeler
Ceramique in Maastricht.

Vierde partij
In

Match
Evgeny Bareev vs Hiarcs-X
Game 2: ½ - ½
GAME 3: ½ - ½
Game 4: ½ - ½
The Chess Events Maastricht Foundation is proud
to announce the Man vs Machine Match between Evgeny Bareev and Hiarcs X. The
four-game match will be played from 28.-31. January 2003 in the Centre Céramique
in Maastricht, The Netherlands with classical time control. The match is
sponsored by Céntre Ceramique, ChessBase, DGT Projects, Duwell and Paradigit
Computers.
Russian Top-GM Evgeny
Bareev, born 21-11-1966, is
currently playing in the Corus Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee. The number 8 of
the world with 2729 ELO-rating combines sound strategic thinking with an
excellent technique, but he is also able to play exciting attacking games.
Bareev won the 2002 Corus Chess Tournament in excellent style and was
semi-finalist at Dortmund 2002. He was second in the individual rankings of
Moscow´s 2002 Match of the Century with a TPR of 2770. The World Champion under
16 of 1982 has been playing chess on a very high level for more than 20 years
and has many good years to come!
The program HIARCS
X, written by Mark Uniacke of England, has been one of the world's top
Programs ever since it won the microcomputer world chess championship in 1993.
HIARCS stands for "Higher
Intelligence Auto Response Chess System". And indeed the distinguishing
feature is that the author, like no other, uses a maximum of chess knowledge to
increase the playing strength of his program. The new version of HIARCS has been
improved and enhanced in a number of areas, especially in its search algorithms
and the implementation of concrete chess knowledge. The search tree has been
further optimised and results in an increase in search depth in the middle game.
This leads to substantially increased tactical power while at the same time the
program maintains its active positional playing style. Chess knowledge has
always been the program's main strength. The improved search algorithms made it
possible to implement even more advanced positional functions, especially in the
areas of "typical pawn structures" and "dynamic evaluation of the
centre". HIARCS 8 evaluates important factors like weak squares, king's
safety, piece exchanges, initiative and king attack much more reliably than the
predecessor versions. Mark Uniacke, who will come to Maastricht to operate his
program himself, has made an
improved version for the match, which is called HIARSC X. Hiarcs´ 8 rating
on the January SSDF list: 2679.
The first game starts at Tuesday, 28 January at
13.00 CET. You can either visit the Centre Céramique or follow the games live
on the internet. The games will be broadcast on the websites www.chessevents.nl
and www.chessbase.com. Well-known study
composer Jan van Reek will analyse the games live with several computer programs
and you can follow his analyses on the Chess Events Maastricht website. Human
webcam Eric van Reem will provide the pictures during the event.

In vooral Duitsland speelt men regelmatig toernooien met PC schaakprogramma's.
